I don't care if monday's blue...

...Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too. Thursday I'll make a beatastic brew. It's Friday, here's your mix. :)

This week I decided to try something different and do an entire mix highlighting one of my favourite artists of all time, Quantic. If you've never heard of Quantic (aka Will Holland), then you're in for a treat. Quantic is a diverse and ridiculously talented producer, remixer, dj and multi-instrumentalist. His music carries the echos and influences of the music played in the barrios of Brazil, the haciendas of Mexico, the streets of New York, the clubs of Cuba and the dance floors of the UK. He produces music under the Quantic moniker, as well as with his live stage bands, The Quantic Soul Orchestra and his Combo Bárbaro.

Here you'll find tracks from all these projects, featuring collaborations with Alice Russell, Greyboy, Sharon Jones, Spanky Wilson, french rapper Trinidad, and remixes of Romanowski and NAS. And this "mini" mix ain't so mini: you're getting 70 mins of funk, soul, salsa, bossa nova and hip hop! :)

(Funny, I totally intended this to be a simple mix so I wouldn't have to spend as much time on it, but I love Quantic's music so much, this ended up being the *longest* mix yet.)

And if you're craving some drum 'n bass, you can still get last week's "Girls vs. Boys" mix here, but only until saturday night:

This also marks the beginning of my last week of fundraising, for both Univox and Movember.

Univox has been a great experience, and I've enjoyed it immensely, working with other musicians and singers to make beautiful music together. I've had the privilege of being involved with some amazing performances, such as Nuite Blanche just a few weeks ago, competing in the Laval International Choir Competition this past summer, and rapping (badly) for the crowd at Sneaky Dee's. If you'd like to support the group and choir arts in the city of Toronto, please consider a $5 (or more) donation to the group!

And my mustache...well, I think it speaks for itself. Mustache? "Mmmmph! Mhhhhrrr mrhhh mhrrrmhm mhrmrmh. Mhrmrmh mmmhrh rhhhrrmmm hhrmrmrh mmmmrrrmhrrm, mrmrhrmrh hr mhhhm mhhrr!" (He says his time is almost up, and if you want to make his existence mean something, please donate to prostate cancer research and sponsor me)

A'ight, c'est ca pour moi. Immagonnacrash...

Katy Perry via Dunproofin'

Ok...normally I don't go for a lot of pop music, but I played this remix of Katy Perry's Hot 'n Cold by the excellent Dunproofin' like a million times today; hooks galore. I particularly like how he changed it from a major key to a minor one, and dirtied it up into a club tune while maintaining the pop bounce. "Someone call a doctor, got a case of love bipolar..."

(Note to music lovers 'n djs: you should check out the rest of this blog for a great source of mashups and remixes. It's a bit hit 'n miss sometimes, but well worth it for the dance floor damage the hits cause)

It's Friday...

Posted By: Shagz

...time for a new free mix! And on Friday the 13th too! Ominous!

This week's mix is titled "Girls vs. Boys", featuring female vocals vs. male vocals, or female singer vs. male producer, or smooth, sexy jazz styles vs. darker, more aggressive beats. Didn't really plan it this way, but that's how it turned out in the end. :) This is a drum 'n bass affair, with tracks and remixes old and new from Ben Westbeech, Jenna G, Culture Shock, The Qemists, Makai and more. Special note for the anime fans: make sure you check the last track...

http://drop.io/freemixfriday3

(Full disclaimer: the scratching performance was done in a few takes. I'm a bit out of practice, and scratching to drum 'n bass is *hard*, so I did a few passes at it and selected the best one.)

I'm not really a drum 'n bass guy. I mean I love the stuff, when it's good; love the energy and speed and punchiness, but I tend to swoop in every once in awhile, grab a handful of what I think are the best tracks, and then disappear for a few months.

That's why I have to give props to my man Shazbot (Ryan Reynolds) for being a prime source of "the best tracks" in drum 'n bass. I've yoinked more than a few tracks from his sets in the past (including at least one track in this mix) so if you think THIS mix is good, then you should go to the source. :)

For more of his music (dj mixes, remixes and original productions) you can find him at the following:

You can still get last week's club/electro-ish house mix here, but only until Saturday night, so get a move on if you haven't already!!

I'm still fundraising for Univox Choir and growin' my Mo for Movember, so if you like chorale music and got a spare $5, help Univox keeping doing what it's doing for choir music in Toronto here:

http://www.canadahelps.org/CharityProfilePage.aspx?CharityID=d95560

and if you like men (and who doesn't?) and mustaches (ditto) then help me raise money for prostate cancer research and awareness for men's health issues here:

(new 'stache update pic just posted tonight!)

Your support (as a fan and as a donor) is greatly appreciated!

I'm constantly impressed by the content that Ean Golden is posting on DJ Tech Tools. The guy has a serious passion for the art.

In this post, he's starting a new series of videos where he digs into the dj bags of the pros. First up, Jessee of MSTRKRFT... (check those $200 ear plugs!)

Free Friday Mix 2

Posted By: Shagz
Date:

Man, I was actually wondering whether or not I was going to pull this off, but here we are, it's friday, 2:30am, and I'm in the middle of uploading another free mix all up this place!

The theme in my life for the past few days seems to be "worries". For whatever reason, I've had a few conversations with friends involving us sharing our problems with each other. We seem to be feeling the weight of life's grind more than usual, or worse, worrying unreasonably and obsessively about things that may never happen.

So here's my "worry free" mix, featuring a number of just-released tracks (like, just 4 days ago) from the likes of Little Boots, Deadmau5, Goose Flesh, NAPT, Wolfgang Gartner and one or two gems from DJ Dan, Chris Ortega/Thomas Gold and...Chuck D? 45 mins of big club tunes. It's less about chasing the blues away and more about kicking their @$$. I hope you enjoy it!

Grab it: http://drop.io/fridayfreemix2

If you missed last week's journey through trip hop, you can still get it here, but for a limited time only:

Free Friday Mix 1: http://drop.io/8lkeawa

Elsewhere, I'm currently involved in two different fundraisers.

One I mentioned last email, raising funds for the young adult choir I'm in, Univox. We're in our 5th season as a choir, and we’re having a "$5 Race" competition between all the members to see who can raise the most money. We're raising funds to help out with our various activities this year, including a February concert w/ full orchestra, tours, our composer-in-residence program and hopefully a CD. Univox has been doing a lot for the arts in Toronto, especially for young people (we have about 60 members between the ages of 22 and 30-something or older), and your support will help us continue to show that choir music is pretty cool. :)

If you guys want to donate $5 (or more of course! Donations over $20 are tax deductible), you can do so by going directly to the donation form online here:

http://www.canadahelps.org/CharityProfilePage.aspx?CharityID=d95560

Note: When you make the donation online, there’s a field you can fill in for a message. Make sure you say you're sponsoring me in that little message box, and/or say it’s for choir member #24.

You can read more about Univox's activities this year on the main site: http://univox.rigent.com/

(Time is running out on this one, there's only a couple of weeks left to donate, so act soon!)

The *other* fundraiser I'm doing is called "Movember". It's a fundraiser for prostate cancer research where guys grow moustaches for the month formerly known as November. Nothing's more manly than a ridiculous moustache, and taking care of yourself should be likewise. By sprouting some handle bars we're hoping to raise awareness about men's health. You can donate online at my "Mo Space":

http://ca.movember.com/mospace/250804

Use the "Donate to me" link in the top left. Same thing, donations over $20 are tax deductible.

I'll be posting pics of my moustache progress through out the month, from ridiculously skint to just plain ridiculous. :)

If you feel like either of these are worthy foundations, I'd appreciate your support. Thanks!
