Movember and Univox

Posted By: Shagz
Date:

Sorry for the lack of dj news and mixes as of late. Things have just been too crazy this year with the changes to the "day job", the types of projects I've been working on and the level of responsibility I've taken on elsewere in my life have all conspired to reduce the time and energy I have for making dj mixes. It's kind of sad to see that it's been over a year since I've released anything new!

I'm hoping to take a break in December where I can spend some time to rest and refresh, and hopefully get one or two mixes out to you.

In the meantime, I have two non-dj related items, one being Movember! Me and some buddies from my choir formed a team this year, and I sacrified my beard in order to participate. You can see some pics and my progress over at my Mo Space

My trucker 'stache has been coming in really well, but the donations not as much. This year in Canada's Movember is raising money in support of prostate cancer and The Male Mental Health Network, two very worthy causes. If you can help out, I'd really appreciate any support you can give!

And speaking of choir, Univox will be performing in December, our annual Christmas concert! We have really beautiful winter-themed music lined up, and our big piece, Lux Aeterna by Morton Lauridsen, will feature a string quartet! For choir lovers (and lovers of music in general), it will be great evening of music.

When: Dec 14, 2012
Where: Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge Street, Toronto (north of St Clair on the west side)
How much: $15 in advance/$20 at the door; $15 students/seniors; anyone under 18 *FREE*

Dog Days, Summer Beats

Hey folks,

For those of you in the Toronto area, I have great news: I'm actually doing a gig that's actually open to the public! That means you get to actually see me play music, and dance 'n everything! ;)

Seriously though, I've been gigging here and there in the past year or so, but everything's been private parties and weddings, and other creative interests and hobbies have had my energy and time instead of organizing and throwing my own james. (Speaking of, my choral arrangement of the Foo Fighter's "My Hero" is up on YouTube if you wanna see what else I was doing.

But now those interests are aligned! Myself and a couple of my fellow djs (including Dynamite Chris Wright) will be spinning beats at a fundraiser jam for the choir on Wed, August 8th @O'Grady's Pub, 171 College St. (Just west of University a couple block; closest TTC station is Queen's Park) Doors are at 8pm, with a $10 cover, all proceeds going to Univox Choir.

I know it's going to be pretty awesome night. I've dj'd for the Univox peeps before and they are just up for it, a real pleasure to spin tunes for. And I've got some new choice dance floor heaters lined up, some cheeky bootlegs and a brand new Macbook to test drive. (My trusty 6-year old machine finally bit the dust; Kids, listen to your parents when the say "back up your data!" I know I did.)

Also...for those who often complain that you never get to see me spin 'cuz I go on past your bedtime (I won't mention any names ;), this being a Wed night gig I'll be going on early at 10:30. I know, incredible. :)

What: Dog Days, Summer Beats, a fundraiser for Univox
When: Wed, Aug 8th, 8pm
Where: O'Grady's Pub, 2nd Floor, 171 College St, Toronto
How much: $10, all proceeds to Univox
Who: Dynamite Chris Wright, dj Quy, Shagz spinning pop to house to breaks to nu disco to electro and everything else inbetween and outside of that. Bring your thirst and your dancing shoes!

Non-DJ Performance: Univox presents

Posted By: Shagz
Date:

It's Christmas concert season again, and Univox has a great show lined up this year. I'm really loving a lot of the music Dallas has put together for this concert, and it's really beautiful stuff, a mix of classical and modern choral Christmas music. The choir is also sounding amazing, even more so that we've grown in size: we're up to 70 people now!

The concert will feature works by local composers Sarah Quartel and Ben Ji-Soo Kim. Quartel’s Snow Angel is a beautiful and unique piece that incorporates dramatic narratives between choral music and piano, cello and percussion accompaniment. We are honoured to welcome Samuel Bisson on cello once again this year.

We are also fortunate to perform a carol composed by new Toronto resident Ben Ji-Soo Kim, an accomplished composer who has had works published with Earthworks and premiered by the renowned Los Angeles Master Chorale. You can listen to Ben's A Christmas Carol here.

The concert will also include contemporary favourites, Ave Maria – Franz Biebl, A Hymn to the Virgin, and Stroope’s All My Heart this Night Rejoices.

Details: Univox present Snow Angel
Dec 10, 8pm
Christ Church Deer Park
1570 Yonge Street
Tickets are $15 in advance either through me or online. $20 at the door.

Heading out on Moby's Trip

Posted By: Shagz
Date:

It's been a long time since I put up a new dj mix - almost a year actually - and I didn't want to make another post without actually having a dj mix to share with you...so if I'm posting, that means I have something. :)

I give you Moby's Trip, a deep tech house mix with some progressive house shiney bits. On Mixcloud.

Moby's Trip by Djshagz on Mixcloud

The mix was originally inspired by my Mom, not so much the musical choices but the little "trick" I've set up in the mix. My Mom was a Suzuki piano teacher, where you learn how to play a musical instrument by ear rather than by sight reading. She had these "endless" cassettes that had a mechanism that would loop the tape, so her students could listen to the song over and over again, with out end.

So I put this mix together so that you can put it on loop and it will seamless mix the end into the beginning, allowing you to play mix indefinitely with no break. 'Cuz you'll totally want to do that. :)

As for the title, it's a little math joke courtesty of my friend Mike and has nothing to do with Moby at all. If you don't get it right away, check out the mix cover on Mix- or Soundcloud, it might help. :)

Hope you enjoy it!
