A mix for my Mom

So...I have some sad news.

On July 14, my mother passed away from cancer. 4 years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She struggled valiantly through various chemo and radiation treatments, sometimes with a smile on her face and sometimes not.

For me, it has partially been a release that Mom has finally passed on. In the end, she was in a lot of pain, as the cancer had moved into her stomach and she was unable to eat anything, so it has been relief that Mom is no longer suffering. But for those of us who remain, there is still the pain of that loss.

This mix is kind of about that loss. It's neither a tribute or dedication to my Mom, but more of an expression of feeling. I guess chock it up to part of the mourning process, or whatever.

The tracks are selected for a few different reasons, mostly that they express a particular feeling that I wanted to convey, or they have lyrics (or a snippet of lyric) that I identified with, or in one or two cases, were songs that Mom really liked or were by groups that she loved.

So, this being a highly personal dj mix/compilation, I don't expect many to like it or get much out of it. But if you know me, or you knew my Mom, you might catch the narrative that's in the music.

  1. Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
  2. The Three Degrees - Collage
  3. Frankie Beverley & the Butlers - Love (Your Pain Goes Deep)
  4. RJD2 - Smoke & Mirrors
  5. Ben Harper - Amen Omen
  6. KD Lang - Hallelujah
  7. Rajaton - Butterfly
  8. Bill Withers - Hope She'll Be Happier (Live @ Carnegie Hall)
  9. The Impressions - People Get Ready
  10. The Beatconductor - Sumthin' Betta

Bonus commentary: There's a couple of verses for "Hallelujah" that I really do it for me, but they aren't in any of the cover versions, and the original Leonard Cohen version is really ugly, 'n I didn't want to use it. :P Ah well...

Here are those lines:

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
